What is Scribane?
Scribane is a writing environment for novelists, journalists, editors, and screenwriters. It supports the full creative process — planning, writing, revising, collaborating, and publishing — from any device, online or offline. It is not a text generator and not a generic notes app: it is a desk built around long-form storytelling.
Who Scribane is for
Writers managing novels, series, essays, articles, or scripts; editors and proofreaders collaborating on manuscripts; and small editorial teams who need structured comments without email chaos.
What Scribane is not
Not an AI ghostwriter. Not Word with plugins. Not a distraction-heavy page layout tool. AI runs only when you ask — your drafts stay yours and are not used to train models.
Writing is so much more than writing
It's not a text generator. It's not Word with plugins. It's the environment where you prepare, write, revise, and collaborate — start to finish, from any device.
Prepare, write, revise, ship
- Prepare the story — Import a draft or start blank. Plan storylines, scenes, chapters, characters, locations and timeline — then chat with a character when you need to test coherence.
- Write without distractions — Focus mode, comfortable typography, footnotes and structure. Leave publishing format for later.
- Revise and collaborate — Ask for suggestions when you want them. Invite editors and readers to comment or suggest edits on the text.
- Ship the manuscript — Technical sheet, export to Word, PDF or EPUB, or share a clean reading link.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Scribane free to use?
You can start with a free trial. The free trial has usage limits (such as the number of projects, documents, uploads, or credits), but there's no time limit. You won't lose access to your account or your work — your content stays yours, and you can export your documents. When you reach those limits, you'll be able to upgrade to a Pro plan. Writers who join during the early access phase will receive discounted pricing when upgrading. Scribane is being built together with its early users. By sharing feedback and helping shape the product, you'll also be offered free credits and additional discounts.
Does Scribane use AI?
Yes — but only when you explicitly ask for it. Scribane uses AI strictly on demand. Models (ours or third-party) are never triggered automatically, in the background, or as part of passive features. If an AI action happens, it's because you requested it. A few important guarantees: - All AI usage is user-initiated. Scribane will never run AI on your content unless you take a deliberate action. - We use paid AI models with "allow improving the models" disabled. Your content is not used to train, fine-tune, or improve any model. - No silent analysis, no background processing, no hidden prompts. As a result, using Scribane is often safer than many free AI tools you may already be using, where content is frequently reused for training by default unless you opt out (or cannot opt out at all). In short: AI in Scribane is a tool you control — when it runs, how it runs, and what it sees.
What about my privacy and intellectual property (IP)?
Your work is 100% yours — always. You retain all rights and full intellectual property over everything you write, upload, or organize in Scribane. Scribane does not claim ownership, licenses, or usage rights over your content beyond what's strictly necessary to provide the service. We take privacy seriously: - Your content is never used to train AI models — ours or anyone else's. - We do not analyze your text for training, fine-tuning, or external datasets. - Your work remains private and under your control. You can find the full legal details here: - Privacy Policy - Terms of Service In short: Scribane is a tool, not a publisher. Your ideas, words, and stories stay yours — period.
Can I work offline?
Yes. Scribane is built offline-first. You can keep writing without a connection; your changes sync automatically when you're back online. Install it as an app on desktop or phone for the smoothest experience.
Can my editor comment without editing the text?
Yes. When you share a document, you choose a role: reader, commenter, or editor. Commenters can leave threads and suggest edits for you to review — without rewriting the manuscript themselves.
Do you support screenplays?
Yes. Script mode kicks in when you type scene headings like INT./EXT., so you can draft screenplays in the same environment as prose — without a separate tool.
Can I talk to my characters?
Yes. Open a character and start a chat — optionally as of a date on the timeline. The reply draws on what you have defined about them and the story so far. Like other AI features, it only runs when you ask.
Why isn't there a classic formatting bar with fonts and sizes?
Because while you're writing, those choices mostly get in the way. The editor is built for drafting — structure, emphasis, and clarity — not for picking typefaces. Fonts and sizes matter when the text leaves the draft and becomes something a reader sees, so we treat them as part of publishing or exporting. That keeps you focused on the words, and keeps the final look consistent when you're ready to share.
What are analysis credits?
Credits only apply to AI features you request — suggestions, document chat, character chat, analyses, synonyms, and similar actions. Writing, organizing, collaborating, and exporting work without spending credits. Scribane is useful with or without AI.
Can I collaborate with my publisher even if they don't have an account?
Yes. You can share any document with an editor, corrector, or publisher directly — they receive a link and can read, comment, or edit depending on the permission you grant, without needing to create a Scribane account.
Why Scribane?
The word scribane comes from the world of antique dealers. It's a term sometimes used to refer to a scriban: an elegant secretary desk designed for writing, with drawers, compartments, and hidden spaces crafted for both utility and intimacy. One such example can be found here. A scribane is not just furniture. It's a promise. It's a place where writing happens deliberately. Where papers are kept close at hand, where ideas are stored in drawers you may open today—or leave closed for months. Everything has its place, but nothing forces itself upon you. That image is the heart of Scribane. Scribane is conceived as a writing desk for the digital age: elegant, focused, and built around the act of storytelling. Projects, chapters, notes, characters, references—each is a drawer you can open when you need it, and ignore when you don't. No clutter. No noise. Just tools waiting patiently. Like its namesake, Scribane doesn't write for you. It offers a space worthy of your writing—and trusts you to do the rest.
